The Oyenike Oyekan foundation cancer awareness outreach continued it's sensitization exercise with another edition of the breast cancer outing at the Sabo primary health care center (PHC), Mokola Ibadan, Oyo State.
The sensitization workshop which took place on Tuesday 11th August 2026, attracted a large crowd of women and girls who came out to be acquainted with the requisite knowledge and information on breast cancer disease, it's symptoms, risk factors and what should be done if the symptoms are observed in the body.
In her presentation which was interpreted in the local language, the programme officer of Oyenike Oyekan foundation Precious Fasiku spoke extensively on what is breast cancer, symptoms, risk factors, self breast examination and how going to the hospital for check on observed symptoms on the breast and body can help in the fight against cancer.
According to her, "The moment you observe changes in the colour of the skin around the breast, a lump or one breast becoming bigger that the other one, go to the hospital for immediate check up". She restated that every woman is a likely victim of breast cancer because of breast tissues that is inherent. But she cautioned the participants to recognize that breast cancer is a product of our gene and environmental factors, rather than being caused by witches, wizards or a curse.
Precious Fasiku also did a demonstration of how to regularly carry out self breast examination as a means to watch out for likely symptoms of breast cancer of which only an examination at the hospital can confirm or disconfirm it. She then asked some of the participants to come out and demonstrate what they understand by self breast examination at the end of the exercise.
"Self breast examination is critical a knowledge for every woman in the fight against breast cancer".
In his own submission, the managing consultant of Oyenike Oyekan foundation Nelson Ekujumi, admonished the participants to recognize that early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, just as he also reiterated that any sudden changes or foreign visitor in the body, must necessitate a visit to the hospital as quickly as possible for proper examination and diagnosis.
Some of the participants spoken to, expressed appreciation to Oyenike Oyekan foundation for the opportunity of the sensitization programme on breast cancer and called on other non governmental organizations and groups to follow suit in Oyenike Oyekan foundation outreach by doing same in other areas of human health in order to save lives.
