Oyenike Oyekan Foundation Debuts at Ibadan Women's Conference 2026 with Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
Thursday April 2 2026 was a glorious day in the ancient city of Ibadan the Oyo State capital as notable women of different callings of Ibadan ancestry, gathered for the Ibadan Women's Conference 2026 which took place at the Bode Amoo hall, Ibadan house, Oke Aremo Yemetu Ibadan.
The Ibadan women's conference 2026 witnessed a large gathering of notable Ibadan Indigenes which included among others, Chief Mrs Bola Doherty (MFR) who was the chairman of the occasion, Chief Mrs Onikepo Akande (CON) a former federal minister of industries who was the distinguished guest speaker, Oyo State commissioner for culture and tourism Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, Barrister Sulaimon Ajeniyi Ajewole who is the President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) and his executives members, the Oyenike Oyekan foundation team led by the managing consultant Nelson Ekujumi and others, a guest speaker Mrs Yetunde Adegoke, different Ibadan women groups based at home and in the Diaspora, non governmental and women organizations, security agencies representatives and the media.
In his address, the chairman of the Ibadan cultural festival planning committee Mogaji Gbolagade said the conference was the outcome of consultations that cut across various segments of the Ibadan people.
The Oyenike Oyekan foundation made it's debut appearance at the 2026 Ibadan women's conference with a presentation on breast cancer. In her submission on Breast Cancer at the event, Miss Precious Fasiku the programme coordinator of Oyenike Oyekan foundation, spoke extensively on breast cancer and how early detection is key for it's treatment and cure. According to her, "Cancer is not a death sentence". She harped on the need for regular check up by women to enable early detection and treatment.
She also made it known that cancer is a disease that is not caused by witches or wizards, but a product of so many factors such as genetics and lifestyle. She identified ignorance as a key obstacle in the fight against cancer and hence Oyenike Oyekan foundation have taken on the critical responsibility of educating and creating awareness around the disease with a view to debunking decades long held myths and superstitious beliefs by opening up the space through sensitization for access to treatment and cure.
In her key note address, Chief Mrs Onikepo Akande (CON) charged women to shun destructive tendencies and support one another for leadership positions just like their male counterparts. She urged the women to recognize that they are as endowed as the male folks in all areas of life, but that lack of support and cooperation among the female gender is their greatest undoing which has placed them at a disadvantaged position compared to the men. She called for a change of heart and strategy towards women empowerment.
