*WHY THE SILENCE?*

*WHY THE SILENCE?*

By Temitope Olowofoyekun

Why the silence over the fulfilment of the promised dividends of democracy in Ondo State in the past few weeks? His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, has demonstrated remarkable leadership by approving the payment of ₦633 million in WAEC fees for secondary school students, approving the employment of over 1,000 secondary school teachers, upgrading RUGIPO to a university, and presenting utility vehicles to the 18 local government chairmen, among other notable achievements.

As much as we believe in criticising the government when its policies seem unfavourable or unappealing, we must also recognise and commend its efforts when it performs excellently, especially during these challenging times of global economic hardship. We must appreciate government initiatives and policies when they positively impact the masses.

Just last year, there was an issue between the Ondo State Government and WAEC over the payment of examination fees. Despite the government's approval of the payment, many individuals harshly criticised the administration, going as far as labelling government officials with different derogatory names.

Some of us will not fold our arms and allow certain individuals to remain silent when the government is making commendable progress, only to resurface with harsh criticisms when there is a minor delay in the execution of policies or projects. We must be fair and objective in our assessments, taking into consideration human factors and economic realities.

It is time to openly appreciate His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, and the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, for their outstanding performance within a short period. The Governor has hit the ground running by announcing key members of his cabinet, ensuring there is no leadership vacuum, and taking proactive steps to deliver on his political and electioneering promises to the good people of Ondo State.

This does not mean that people should not criticise government policies when they are unpopular or fail to serve the best interests of the people, but it must be constructive devoid of hatred. Constructive criticism or opposition plays a crucial role in governance. However, when a government is performing credibly well, the people should also be bold enough to acknowledge and appreciate its good work rather than focusing solely on criticism. Balanced and objective engagement is key to ensuring progress and development in our society.
