Railway Unions Assures MD of Harmonious Working Relationship
The workers unions in the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers (NURW) an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), today at the corporation headquarters in Lagos, assured the newly appointed Managing Director Comrade Kayode Opeifa of their unflinching support towards a harmonious working relationship.
At the maiden meeting with the two unions led by Comrade Okeke Chukwuemeka M. president general of (SSASCGOC) and Comrade Innocent Luka Alili president general of (NURW) presented their congratulatory letters to the new helmsman and wished him a successful tenure, while pledging their commitment to a harmonious working system to position the railway sector in line with the transformation agenda of the present administration.
Comrade Opeifa emphasized the Federal Government resolve of putting in place and sustaining smooth operations of the railway system so that it can play it's critical role in the transportation sector in the movement of people and goods at a cheaper, safer and secured environment and thus bring down the prices of goods and services to the benefit of Nigerians.
The new MD also implored the workers to key into the transformation agenda of the President Bola Tinubu administration in repositioning the railway system for the greater good of Nigerians by being a collaborative partner in progress.
Earlier, the workers unions had tabled their demands which have been a source of industrial conflict in the industry since the administration of former President Obasanjo and remained unresolved till date.
However, just like Comrade Opeifa averted another round of industrial conflict in the railway sector on the 30th of January 2025 immediately after he assumed office wherein he appealed to the workers to give him time to look into their grievances and they obliged by suspending their planned industrial action that was supposed to start on that day, the MD in keeping to his words, at the maiden meeting immediately resolved some of the demands and gave assurances on others to the satisfaction of the workers.
The workers in return, pledged their support and commitment to the mandate of the new administration of the Nigeria Railway Corporation led by Comrade Opeifa and assured that the existing industrial peace and harmony will be sustained in order to move the industry forward and contribute it's quota to the economy in line with the vision of the Federal Government.
Comrade Opeifa in response to the assurances of the workers, appreciated them for the trust reposed in him and by extension President Bola Tinubu administration and urged them to see themselves and the management as members of one family with a common destiny to succeed and ensure that the railway system takes it's rightful place in the Nigeria's economy for the good of all.
