The harassment of Tani Olohun must end immediately

...commends Sunday Igboho

The Yoruba Amnesty Group is concerned with the incessant harassment of the Isese defender, Adegbola Abdulazeez, popularly known as Tani Olohun, by police officers in Ibadan with the most recent foiled arrest allegedly linked to jumping or breach of bail condition(s) in a case of defamation against Islamic Clerics in Kwara State. The foiled abduction came with a grave violation of his human rights to dignity, freedom of expression, and anti-torture.

The Yoruba Amnesty Group recognises the constitutional and fundamental rights of every citizen to freedom of expression, conscience, freedom of religion and freedom of thought.

We therefore urge intolerant elements with their various beliefs in Yorubaland to exercise self restraint so as not to fan embers of religious clash. Yoruba race is peopled by a vast knowledge of culturally grounded in customs and traditions of our forebears. We have always lived in peace and harmony. We have most times resolved our differences at our family or village squares. We hold our traditional institutions and their custodians in high esteem. We do not cower to imported or colonial mentality of relegating the beliefs of our ancestors to the background.

We commend the prompt intervention of Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho in foiling the abduction of Tani Olohun at his residence in Ibadan. We also commend the neighbours and residents of the community where the botched abduction took place.

We wish to urge the public to continue to partner with relevant authorities in collaboration with community or grassroots security networks like Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, Vigilantes, Amotekun, Iru Ekun et al in tackling lawlessness in our land.

Signed:

Jubril Ogundimu,

Convener.
