FIRST LADY SEN. OLUREMI TINUBU COMMISSION'S FIRST ALTERNATIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS IN NIGERIA IN LAGOS
... Aims To Give Girls A Second Chance At Quality Education
A new chapter was opened in Nigeria’s drive for inclusive and girl-focused education with the commissioning of the first Alternative Secondary School for Girls in Nigeria, a landmark initiative designed to provide a second chance at quality education for girls whose schooling has been interrupted by various social, economic or personal circumstances.
The school was commissioned by the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, who was ably represented at the ceremony by the wife of the Vice President, Her Excellency Hajia Nana Shettima, on Friday, 14th August, at the School premises, Old Ojo Road, Agboju Amuwo, Lagos, Nigeria.
The commissioning of the Alternative Secondary School for Girls marks an important milestone in the nation's quest to make education more inclusive and responsive to the needs of every learner.
The institution is expected to provide beneficiaries with a supportive learning environment where they can pursue secondary education, acquire relevant skills, and prepare for further academic and economic opportunities.
In her keynote address, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, reaffirmed her commitment to promoting education, empowerment and opportunities for Nigerian girls.
She thanked the Lagos State Government for complementing the Federal Government’s efforts and suggested that at least one alternative High School for girls should be established in each of the senatorial districts. “You can achieve what you want with dedication and resilience”, she advised the ladies.
She urged the students to regard the school as a platform for rebuilding their dreams and equipping themselves with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become productive and responsible citizens.
The First Lady commended the Lagos State Government, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, education officials, partners, and all individuals who contributed to the realisation of the project.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun described the establishment of the Alternative Secondary School for Girls as a bold and innovative step towards ensuring that every girl has an opportunity to complete her education and realize her full potential.
The Commissioner noted that the initiative was born out of the need to respond to the realities faced by girls whose education had been disrupted, stressing that such circumstances should not permanently define their future.
He stated that the school provides an alternative pathway through which beneficiaries can return to formal education, acquire relevant knowledge and skills, regain confidence, and prepare for further education, entrepreneurship, and meaningful participation in society.
He commended the Federal Government, the Lagos State Government, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and all stakeholders whose commitment and support contributed to the establishment of the school.
