NRC COMMITS TO ZERO TOLERANCE ON DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING

SPEECH DELIVERED BY THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF NIGERIAN RAILWAY CORPORATION, DR KAYODE OPEIFA, ON THE COMMEMORATION OF INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE AND ILLICIT TRAFFICKING, TODAY JUNE 26, 2026.

Esteemed Directors.

Management and staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation

All Protocols duly observed.Theme: "NRC Reiterates Commitment to a Drug-Free, Safe Railway"

Today, the Nigerian Railway Corporation joins the global community in commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

As the Corporation responsible for moving millions of Nigerians and transporting critical goods across the country, we recognize that drug abuse is more than a public health concern. It is a serious safety, security, and operational risk. On the railway, a single moment of impaired judgment can have devastating consequences.

Our Position is Clear

The Nigerian Railway Corporation maintains a zero-tolerance policy on drug abuse and illicit trafficking across all train corridors, stations, workshops, and operational facilities. We are strengthening collaboration with the NDLEA, FRSC, the Nigerian Railway Police Force, and our staff unions to ensure that our railway corridors are never used for the trafficking of banned and illicit substances.

Our Commitment

Sensitize and Support: We will continue to scale up awareness campaigns, education, and counselling programmes for our staff and host communities.

Care First: Staff members struggling with substance use are encouraged to access our confidential support channels. Seeking help is a sign of strength and responsibility.

Remain Vigilant: We urge passengers, staff, and members of the public to report any suspicious activities. Railway safety is everyone's responsibility.

As we mark this important day, let us all make the right choice: Choose life over drugs. Choose safety over risk.

Together, we will keep the Nigerian Railway safe, secure, drug-free, and on track for national development.

Signed

KAYODE OPEIFA. Ph.D (FInstTA, FITP, FCILT)
