LAWMA BOSS VOWS LEGAL ACTION AGAINST ILLEGAL CART PUSHER, NOTORIOUS MISCREANT ARRESTED DURING ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION OPERATION AT ALAYABIAGBA MARKET, LAGOS.

In a firm reiteration of the Lagos State Government’s unwavering resolve to uphold environmental sanitation, safeguard public health and entrench urban orderliness, traders at Alayabiagba Market, situated in the Boundary area of Ajegunle, earlier today embarked on a large-scale environmental clean-up exercise under the stringent supervision of officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in strategic collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LASESC).

The sanitation exercise, which recorded impressive participation from market stakeholders was deliberately structured to restore environmental decorum, stem the tide of indiscriminate refuse disposal and reinforce a sustainable culture of cleanliness within commercial hubs across the metropolis. The initiative equally constitutes a vital plank of LAWMA’s broader agenda to institutionalize environmental accountability among traders and market leadership bodies.

During the course of the enforcement and sanitation operation, LAWMA operatives apprehended a notorious criminal element operating within the market, resulting in the recovery of several bags containing substances suspected to be Indian hemp. This incident once again underscored the inherent correlation between environmental degradation and the proliferation of criminality. In a related development, a cart pusher was arrested along the Ago Palace corridor for brazenly dumping refuse on the road median, in flagrant violation of extant environmental and sanitation laws of the State.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin reaffirmed the Authority’s unyielding commitment to sustaining rigorous environmental surveillance, monitoring and enforcement across Lagos State.

He stressed that the clean-up exercise at Alayabiagba Market should not be misconstrued as a one-off intervention, but rather as a forerunner to a comprehensive, state-wide environmental compliance drive spanning all markets.

Dr. Gbadegesin issued an unequivocal warning that any market adjudged to be environmentally inimical or complicit in unlawful refuse disposal practices would attract swift and decisive sanctions, including outright closure, in strict conformity with existing environmental statutes.

He emphasized that markets must transcend their conventional role as mere centres of commerce and evolve into models of cleanliness, safety and civic responsibility.

The LAWMA helmsman further directed market executives and supervisory officials to decisively purge their domains of miscreants, hoodlums and criminal elements who exploit commercial spaces as sanctuaries for illicit activities, noting that environmental orderliness and public security are fundamentally interlinked.

He confirmed that both the apprehended miscreant and the illegal cart pusher would be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction, stressing that the enforcement action was intended to serve as a compelling deterrent to individuals and groups predisposed to flouting the State’s environmental laws.

Dr. Gbadegesin reiterated LAWMA’s unwavering resolve to deepen collaboration with sister agencies, market associations and community stakeholders in the collective quest to deliver a cleaner, safer and healthier Lagos, urging residents and traders alike to embrace environmental cleanliness not as an imposition by government, but as a shared civic responsibility.

He assured that LAWMA would continue to deploy an integrated mix of surveillance, enforcement and sustained public enlightenment initiatives to safeguard public spaces and preserve the environmental integrity befitting Lagos’ stature as a global megacity.
