HON. GIWA URGES HEIGHTENED ROAD SAFETY CONSCIOUSNESS AS LASTMA OPERATIVES RESCUE TRAPPED DRIVER IN MULTI-VEHICULAR CRASH AT OJOTA INBOUND KETU, IKORODU ROAD.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has once again affirmed its institutional alertness and lifesaving efficacy following a grave multiple-vehicle collision that occurred earlier today along the Ojota inbound Ketu axis of Ikorodu Road, involving three vehicles on the main carriageway.
Preliminary security and incident intelligence disclosed that a Toyota Sienna saloon car (KRD 311 JH), had decelerated to allow a large crowd of pedestrians to safely traverse the expressway, with a mini truck positioned immediately behind it. Tragically, a Volkswagen commercial bus driven at an excessive and uncontrolled speed, failed to slow down and forcefully rammed into the two stationary vehicles, precipitating a violent collision.
The ferocity of the impact resulted in the Volkswagen commercial bus driver being severely trapped within the mangled wreckage, necessitating an urgent and well-coordinated emergency intervention. LASTMA rescue operatives, who arrived at the scene with commendable promptness, swiftly deployed specialised extrication equipment and successfully freed the trapped driver, thereby averting a potentially fatal outcome.
Subsequent to the successful rescue, fellow commercial motorists at the scene promptly conveyed the critically injured and fractured driver to an undisclosed medical facility for immediate and intensive medical care.
The timely and professional intervention of LASTMA personnel proved instrumental in preventing secondary casualties, mitigating further risk and restoring vehicular movement along the heavily trafficked expressway.
Security reinforcement throughout the rescue operation was provided by officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Area ‘H’ Ogudu Police Division, who ensured effective crowd control, secured the accident scene and facilitated the seamless execution of the emergency response.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, extended his deep-seated wishes for the speedy and complete recovery of the injured Volkswagen commercial bus driver. He further lauded the professionalism, bravery and rapid response of LASTMA operatives, emphasising that their intervention once again highlighted the Agency’s indispensable role in preserving lives and maintaining road safety across Lagos State.
Hon. Giwa seized the occasion to issue a stern admonition to all motorists to consistently exercise prudence and heightened safety consciousness on the roads, underscoring the non-negotiable necessity of adhering to regulated speed limits, exercising patience and remaining particularly vigilant in zones characterised by high pedestrian movement.
According to him, unwavering compliance with traffic regulations and the cultivation of responsible driving habits remain critical pillars in the collective effort to curb road traffic accidents and safeguard human lives.
LASTMA, while reiterating its unflinching commitment to continuous traffic surveillance, rapid incident response and proactive traffic management, calls on all road users to cooperate fully with traffic officials and comply strictly with extant traffic laws in the overarching interest of public safety and orderly mobility.
