Giving Hope and Healing: Vcare for Development Foundation Launches Reform360 to Support Justice-Impacted Persons in Nigeria
Lagos, Nigeria – Mental health challenges among incarcerated persons remain one of the most overlooked issues in Nigeria’s correctional system, where limited access to care, persistent stigma, and low awareness continue to hinder rehabilitation and reintegration.
To bridge these gaps, the Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in collaboration with the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), has launched Reform360: Reinvent, Reconnect, Reintegrate—a human-centred programme designed to strengthen mental health support and drive sustainable correctional reforms. The initiative is supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO).
As part of the programme, over 100 inmates of the Ikoyi Male Medium Security Custodial Centre have completed Mental Health First Aider training, with a total of 107 certificates issued, including seven to correctional officers.
Reform360 positions mental health as a core pillar of effective rehabilitation. Beneficiaries have reported improved emotional regulation, better sleep, strengthened empathy, and renewed hope.
One participant described the programme as transformative, stating:
“I almost lost hope, but this programme brought me back to life. I have been rebirthed.”
A cell elder added, “This didn’t just teach us; it softened our hearts.”
A correctional officer also confirmed visible behavioural changes, noting one previously withdrawn inmate who now bathes regularly, smiles often, and reconnects with others.
Reform360 provides a structured pathway for justice-impacted individuals to reinvent themselves, reconnect with positive opportunities, and reintegrate into society. With SEEPCO’s support, the programme seeks to build a safer and more inclusive society by addressing mental health needs and reducing stigma to improve rehabilitation outcomes.
Beyond its immediate impact, the initiative aims to strengthen long-term support systems that enhance well-being and prepare beneficiaries for successful reintegration.
The programme directly advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—notably SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
VCDF says it will continue leveraging its partnership with SEEPCO to champion public health and socio-economic initiatives that uphold human dignity. SEEPCO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting community interventions that deliver measurable and lasting impact.
