Cross Carpeting: Three PDP Lawmakers Defect to APC as Party Consolidates Majority in the House

The House of Representatives on Tuesday witnessed the defection of three Members of the Minority Caucus from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during plenary.

Their letters of resignation were read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, at the commencement of proceedings, wherein they cited unresolved internal crises within the PDP as the reason for their decision.

The Members who defected are:

Rep. Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi (Ikara/Kubau Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC;

Rep. Sadiq Ango Abdullahi (Sabon Gari Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC; and

Rep. Hussaini Abdulkarim Ahmed (Kaduna South Federal Constituency, Kaduna State) – formerly of the PDP, now of the APC.

With this development, the APC now holds 13 of the 16 House seats from Kaduna State.

Overall, the total number of defections in the 10th Assembly has now reached 51, with the APC gaining 48 Members. The PDP has gained two, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) gained one. Conversely, the PDP has lost 32 seats, the Labour Party 12, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) three, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) two, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and APGA have each lost one.

The latest defections reflect the continuing political realignments within Kaduna State, as party structures reposition ahead of future elections. The movement of key legislators into the ruling party underscores the deepening influence of the APC in the State and signals a reshaping of political alliances both within constituencies and across the broader regional political landscape.

Signed:

Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., mnipr

Spokesman, House of Representatives
