NRC and LAMATA, Strengthening Collaboration on Blue and Red Line Rail Projects.
In tandem with his vision to reposition the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for efficient service delivery in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu administration, the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Comrade Kayode Opeifa with his management team and that of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) led by it's Managing Director, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo undertook a collaborative joint tour of key stations and facilities along the Blue and Red line rail corridor on Monday 25th August, 2025.
The visit and collaborative tour was aimed at sharing practical experiences, deepening collaboration, and exploring innovative approaches to powering Nigeria’s rail future.
The delegations, led by the Managing Director of LAMATA and the Managing Director of NRC, began the tour from the Marina Blue rail train Station, where they inspected critical facilities such as the training room and surveillance control room. From there, the team moved to Mile 2 train Station for a briefing on operational activities, before proceeding to the National Arts Theatre train Station Iganmu, where they inspected the Independent Power Plant (IPP) sub-station and the Operations Control Centre (OCC). The tour ended with a visit to the Oyingbo Station, the central hub of the Red Line project.
The visit highlighted how Lagos has pioneered the use of cleaner energy in rail transport operations. For over two years, the Lagos Blue Rail Line has been operating on electric power with an impressive 99% uptime, making it the first of its kind in Sub Sahara West Africa. The initiative has not only improved connectivity across Lagos but also set a benchmark for modern, sustainable transport systems in Nigeria.
Both agencies used the visit and the tour to exchange knowledge on ticketing systems, crowd management, frequency of services, and connectivity. NRC, as regulator and partner, has been instrumental in ensuring seamless operations through certification, training, and the development of track access programs that aligned with LAMATA’s vision.
The discussions also touched on transitioning from diesel-powered trains to Cleaner alternatives such as gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), while drawing lessons from how LAMATA successfully moved to electric operations.
The collaboration between both organizations, underscored a shared vision: to deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable public transport system to Lagosians, while creating a model that other states across Nigeria could adapt for their rail development in contributing to the country's GDP and national development.
