WHY THE SILENCE? A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF ONDO STATE

*WHY THE SILENCE? A CALL TO ACTION FOR THE PEOPLE OF ONDO STATE*

There comes a time in the life of a people when silence becomes dangerous, especially when it concerns opportunities that could shape the economic destiny of a generation. In Ondo State today, we stand on the threshold of such a moment, and our collective response will determine whether history remembers us for action or inaction.

Under the progressive and people-centered leadership of His Excellency, Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, the Executive Governor of Ondo State, and his dependable deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, the state has witnessed impressive strides in governance. Within a short span, they have delivered solid democratic dividends. These include the full payment of ₦633 million in WAEC fees for secondary school students across the state, the employment of over a thousand qualified teachers in public secondary schools, the upgrading of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO) to a university, and the distribution of utility vehicles to the 18 local government chairmen to aid governance at the grassroots. Beyond these, infrastructural development is being accelerated across the state with visible results.

Yet, despite these laudable achievements, many remain silent, especially on what is arguably the most economically transformative project in the history of Ondo State;  the $15 billion Backbone Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (BINL) Refinery and Free Trade Zone, to be located at Erunona/Ogboti in Ilaje Local Government Area.

This massive industrial project, which includes a 500,000-barrel-per-day refinery, a $2.6 billion fertilizer and harmonial plant, and a major petrochemical facility, has the potential to revolutionise the entire economic landscape of the Sunshine State. It is important to recall that Ondo State once had a similar opportunity during the administration of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko. Unfortunately, that chance was lost when Alhaji Aliko Dangote decided to move his refinery project away from Ilaje, allegedly due to issues surrounding local support and political will. The pain of that lost opportunity lingers to this day.

Now, under the purposeful leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa, Ondo State has been presented with a second chance, and it must not be wasted. This refinery is more than a project; it is a symbol of restored hope, economic liberation, and the reward of strategic leadership. The fact that the current governor is an indigene of the host community further strengthens the assurance that this time, the vision will not be derailed. His direct ties to the community and his proven business acumen position him as the right man to drive the project to completion with minimal friction.

This project will create a vast number of jobs for youth and skilled professionals, attract both foreign and local investors, and stimulate a wave of industrialisation that will boost the state’s internally generated revenue. The interconnectedness of the refinery with the proposed Ondo Deep Seaport, a petrochemical complex, and the fertilizer plant, means the state is poised to become a major industrial hub in West Africa. Furthermore, the strategic location of Ondo State along the Lagos-Calabar corridor, enhanced by the upcoming superhighway, will unlock unprecedented trade and transportation opportunities.

Maritime activities in the coastal areas of Ilaje and Ese-Odo will experience rapid growth, as the region becomes a central hub for oil and gas logistics, shipping, and international commerce. This means new businesses, thriving ports, improved local infrastructure, and increased wealth generation for both government and citizens.

It is, therefore, unacceptable that indigenes of Ondo State, particularly from the oil-producing areas, would remain silent at such a critical time. Political affiliation must not blind us to the reality that this project will benefit everyone, whether APC, PDP, or any other party. This is a moment for unity, not division. This is about our economy, our children’s future, and the long-overdue development of our oil-rich communities.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa deserves not just our appreciation but our full support. His courage, initiative, and drive to attract a project of this magnitude to Ondo State are worthy of loud applause. His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa is using his business background and leadership influence not for personal gain but to uplift an entire state. It is a rare example of leadership that works, and it must be encouraged.

Unfortunately, there are those who remain quiet in times of progress, only to become loud when there is a challenge. Such behaviour is unhelpful. We must build a culture that praises good governance as much as it challenges bad policy. Constructive criticism remains essential in a democracy, but so too is the need for fairness and objectivity. When leaders do well, we must say so, boldly and proudly.

Let us come together as one people and support this project. Let us champion it on our streets, in our communities, in our churches and mosques, on social media, and in every political gathering. Let us defend it from enemies of progress. Let us remind the world that Ondo State is ready for industrial greatness and that we, her citizens, are united behind our leaders to bring that vision to life.

The time to speak is now!

The time to support it is now.!!

The time to act is now.!!!
