.... Reiterate the need for early detection as a pathway in the fight against cervical cancer
The Oyenike Oyekan foundation, a non governmental organization with focus on cancer related issues and social welfare today Tuesday 22nd July 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State intensified it's cancer awareness and sensitization outreach with another edition on cervical cancer at the Ajibode primary health centre, Akinyele local government council area of Oyo State.
The programme which was well attended by women from the local government council area and it's environs had in attendance officials from the Oyenike Oyekan Foundation, representatives from the Oyo State ministry of health led by the head of non communicable disease Mrs Christiana Adedeji and Mrs Olubitan Funmilola as well as community and religious leaders and members of the press.
Mr. Nelson Ekujumi of Oyenike Oyekan foundation welcomed the participants to the programme, just as he delivered a lecture on the meaning, cause, symptoms and treatment for cervical cancer. He also informed the gathering that, each year, more than half a million women are diagnosed with cervical cancer which results in the death of over 300,000 globally. He admonished the participants to take the issue of cervical cancer seriously just like the Oyenike Oyekan foundation is doing with it's awareness and sensitization outreach.
The awareness and sensitization outreach then went into a question and answer session in which the participants displayed good understanding of the topic discussed and even asked questions about long held myths on cancer.
In her own lecture, Mrs Christiana Adedeji the head of the non communicable disease desk of the Oyo State ministry of health, spoke in the local language and enjoined the participants majorly made up of women to go for regular medical check up if they notice any symptoms of cervical cancer and not to assume because like she put it, "early detection is the pathway to fighting and overcoming cancer".
Mrs Olubitan Funmilola on her part appealed to the women to take extra concern about their health status because of it's vulnerability to all kinds of challenges unlike their male counterparts. She called on the women to immediately visit health institutions if they observe any symptoms and not resort to self medication which is dangerous.
One of the participants Mrs Solomon Adeola who spoke to our correspondents at the outreach, appreciated the Oyenike Oyekan foundation for the awareness and sensitization programme which they asserted had greatly illuminated their ignorance on what cervical cancer is all about, just as they appealed to other well meaning and people oriented NGOs and bodies, to follow in the footsteps of the foundation, so as to save lives.
