Nigerians as The Problem of Nigeria

Nigerians as The Problem of Nigeria

Every time there is a discussion on Nigeria's problems, the citizens are always too quick to point accusing fingers at leadership as the cause. This response by a vast majority of Nigerians when dissecting the nations woes doesn't resonate with me as one always disagree and even go further to ask that, this our leaders, are they from the moon or a product of our society?

So many a time, when one engages in such discussions on Nigeria's woes, the pretence and hypocrisy by Nigerians as being blameless while the leadership should be held responsible is incomprehensible.

A lot of factors can be adduced to rationalize the fact that we Nigerians whether as leaders or followers are responsible for Nigeria's woes. Sadly, Nigerians like scapegoating on any issue instead of looking at the issues dispassionately and pointing fingers at the appropriate quarters.

This writer is of the view that the genesis of the country's woes can be laid at the doorstep of the failure of the institution of a child's first contact with civilization be it a male or female, which is the family.

Nigerians want to make an omelette without breaking an egg. Same people who are quick to hold leadership as the cause of the nation's woes, love to pretend as if they are saints and without sin.

These are the same people who will cut corners at the slightest opportunity, who will attempt to fleece or cheat the other citizen if the window is available. Nigerians tend to believe that because they are not entrusted in a position of authority either by election or appointment, so whatever misdemeanor they commit in their little corner, they shouldn't be held accountable, rather it's because those in authority in their estimation are not up and doing, even when they can't point to the specifics to substantiate this buck passing.

I live in a middle class income level residential estate in Lagos, right now, my local government chairman is undertaking the reconstruction of our roads. Lo and behold, we woke up some few day to a notice on our estate WhatsApp platform, informing us that the contractors equipments and materials in terms of sand, plywood and drainage boards being stolen and that the rate of the theft is alarming, yet when you interrogate this crime, instead of us all to look in the mirror and tell ourselves the bitter truth, that the insect eating the vegetable is right inside the vegetable, some will rather identify the blame for this show of shame on the leadership of the country. I just can't understand or comprehend.

Looking at the scenario just mentioned, one feels obliged to ask, if it's our political leadership in my local or state government or federal government, that is responsible for the theft of contractors equipments and materials in site in my little corner of the geographical territory of Nigeria?

Unless and until we become truthful to ourselves in addressing our societal ills, by admitting that we are all culpable for the mess we have found ourselves by the failure of the family which is no longer able to inculcate good values and virtues in our children to become responsible teenagers and adults, only then will we be on the road to recovery and the birth of a better nation.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thank you.
