Recall that the day 1 of the 25% Ounje Eko food discount market started last week Sunday 17th March 2024 with an impressive turnout of Lagosians who thronged the various venues to benefit from the sale of the discounted items. Our correspondents who visited some of the centres reported that though some centres started late last week, some others started on time and the response from buyers spoken to, was a plea to the Lagos State government to make the 25% reduction in food prices market, a continuous one, just as they also called for creation of more centres.
Our correspondent who visited some of the centres today, notably Saka Tinubu memorial secondary school, Orile Agege LCDA and Alimosho secondary school, Alimosho local government council area both in Lagos State, reported a large turnout of Lagosians to the centres.
According to buyers spoken to at the centres, they commended the government for the noble initiative of 25% food discount market meant to bring succour in the midst of the present economic challenging times confronting the people.
The huge turnout of buyers resulted in the basic foodstuffs like rice, beans, garri and crates of eggs being exhausted very early as a result of the large number of buyers who came out to benefit from the discounted items.
A large section of the buyers spoken to, pleaded with the Lagos State government to make the 25% Ounje Eko food discount market, a continuous exercise because it has brought relief to many homes, just as they expressed appreciation for this initiative which is laudable.
Also, some of the beneficiaries of the 25% food discount market spoken to, called for the food supplies to the centres to be increased to cope with the huge turnout of buyers who now look forward to the Ounje Eko food discount Sunday market as an avenue to cushion their economic plight.
Another notable discovery seen at the centres were the provisions of ambulances and public conveniences for the markets by the Lagos State government. The officers and men of the Nigeria police force were complemented by operatives of the NSCDC and the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corp (LNSC) to provide security, just as operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) ensured free flow of traffic within the vicinity of the markets.
