NLC/TUC Suspends National Strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called off their two days old nationwide strike meant to protest the attack on its President Comrade Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the Imo State capital on the 1st of November 2023.
Recall that the NLC president Joe Ajaero was in Owerri, the Imo State capital to mobilize workers for a state protest against the government of Governor Hope Uzodinma labour policies, but the protest rally turned into an assault on comrade Joe Ajaero by some persons.
Consequently, the organized labour under the NLC and TUC demanded the immediate removal of the Imo State Commissioner of Police, the area commander as well as the DPO of the jurisdiction of the attack and a public apology from the imo State government, failure which it threatened to embark on a nationwide strike from the 14th of November 2023.
Despite a subsisting lawful court order by the National Industrial Court and the setting up of a committee to investigate the assault of Mr Joe Ajaero by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the NLC and the TUC embarked on the strike.
However, following the intervention of the federal government through the office of the national security adviser and the minister of labour and productivity, the government held a meeting with the leadership of the organized labour on Wednesday 15th November 2023 to find an amicable resolution to the crisis and for the strike to be called off.
Rising from an emergency meeting of the NEC of both the NLC and the TUC, the organized labour suspended the strike action.
