CSER COMMENDS LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT ENFORCEMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND NO STREET TRADING LAWS

A civil society organization Centre for Social and Economic Rights (CSER) has commended the Lagos State government for it's responsiveness and responsibility in enforcing the environmental and no street trading laws of the state.

In a press statement issued in Lagos by the executive director of the organization Nelson Ekujumi, he stated that, "We are appreciative of the commitment of the Lagos State government to enforcing the no street trading and environmental sanitation laws which is highly desirable and commendable".

The group noted it's observations of the commitment of the state government to the enforcement of our laws as exemplified by the directives of the Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently during his on the spot visits to public facilities such as the ongoing red rail line, the Lagos Badagry blue rail line amongst others, where he warned street/rail line traders and loiters to vacate the rail lines corridor and other non street trading zones in order to save lives, protect public health and safety.

It's an indisputable fact that Nigeria operates a constitutional democracy in which the primary responsibility of government is the security of life and property. In view of this fact, government recognizing it's primary responsibility promulgated laws to guide and guard the actions of citizens and government for the collective good.

Therefore, the enactment of the no street trading and environmental laws by the Lagos State government since time immemorial, is in sync with the functions of any responsible government anywhere in the world, which is designed to protect public health, safety and security and is non negotiable. It is in this light, that we at CSER, salute the Lagos State government for it's unavowed enforcement of the no street trading and environmental laws which has resulted in the clampdown on violators according to law.

Street trading and environmental law breaches no matter under what guise, must not only be frowned at, but legislated against because of the danger they pose to societal health, safety and security. Street trading poses a grave threat to national security because it causes road congestion, traffic bottlenecks, accidents and traffic robberies which have resulted in loss of lives, damage to limbs and destruction/dispossession of properties.

Street trading is one of such acts by citizens that endanger life, public health and safety and must not be excused on the flimsy grounds of trying to eke a living, which is what the no street trading law sets to accomplish, same with the environmental laws, and as responsible citizens and group, "We stand firm with the Lagos State government on the enforcement of our laws for public good".

Presently, the world of which Nigeria is not isolated, is reeling from the effect of climate change of which flooding and other impacts that could arise from environmental abuse and disruptions must be checked and curtailed to avert the human catastrophe that follow.

According to CSER, "We call on citizens engaged in trading to ensure that they carry out their business within the confines of the laws of Lagos State. We equally admonish the markets leaderships to conduct market activities and operations in absolute compliance with our environmental laws to safeguard public health, safety and security which has been severely undermined by their activities and has resulted in markets being shut down as stipulated by law".

Thank you.

God bless Lagos State.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Your's Sincerely,

E-signed.

Nelson Ekujumi,
Executive Director.
