The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab on Saturday  reopened Alayabiagba Market in Ajegunle after adherence to all contravened laws which earlier caused the closure of the market.

Speaking with newsmen during a inspection to the  market the Commissioner said government decided to re open the market after it discovered that all checklist given to the officials of the Market have been addressed.

He highlighted some of the contravention that were addressed to include a placement of Double Dino Bin within the market as well as erection of  fence at the entrance of the market.

Wahab said Government will further ensure sustainability of all sanitation guiding the establishment of markets spaces  urging traders in the market to respect the environment and  ensure proper waste disposal at all time.

"We must stop littering our market with wastes,  segregate and bag our wastes and always patronize PSP operators, stoping illegal dumpsites on road medians, kerbs, open spaces, and road setbacks and start policing our environment ”he emphasized.

Earlier in the day the Comissioner  visited the  Lekki axis where alot many human contraventions were discovered resulting from construction work in the area.

The visit was conducted alongside officials of Lekki Residents Association (LIRA) to some black spots  in the axis and to address issues surrounding clogged up drains and mop up floods that have taken over streets and roads in Lekki.

The Commissioner said  the ultimate goal of clearing and dredging of all drainage channels and cannals  is to allow easy passage of rainstorm water.

saying Government has made continous dredging of major drainage channels and canals spread across the state a norm in order to avoid dangers of flooding adding that succor will come to Lekki residents as soon as clogged up tertiary drains are cleaned up by them.

He emphasized that the Ministry in conjunction with other relevant agencies will ensure

the seal up of all commercial buildings houses on  Admiralty way for contravention of Environmental Laws.

He said the poor state of the drainage system management by these commercial buildings had seriously affected the road networks in Lekki axis despite the continuous rehabilitation of the roads by the State Government.

He reiterated the State Government has zero tolerance for environmental abuse especially drainage blockage, saying a classic example is the canal at Durosimi Etti channel which is litered with waste by shuttle buses parked beside canal saying such an act is unacceptable.

He  added that the Government would ensure continuous cleaning of the of the environment thereby urging LASPARK as a matter of urgency to take over and ensure the  greenery beside the Durosimi-Etti canal.

He said those operating illegal car wash  centers and auto mobile mechanics converting public spaces to mechanic workshops should vacate such places immediately particularly the illegal mechanic workshop besides Parktonian Hotel on Admiralty Way.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi - Akodu appealed to the people to desist from dumping refuse into the drains, adding that clogging of the drains have been compounded by the activities of residents who have turned many major drainage channels into refuse dumps including tertiary drains across the state.

He also reiterated the warning issued to all property owners who have built on set backs of drainage channels or drainage alignments to remove all such structures as they constitute major impediments to free flow of water into the various drainage channels.

The Commissioner was accompanied by the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi - Akodu Permanent Secretary Office of Environmental Services, Mr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen and his counterpart Engr. Olalekan Shodeide as well as Managing Director, LAWMA Mr Muyiwa Gbadegesin.
